If you’re a music fanatic who wants to jam out all summer long, then a role as a music instructor at camp in Canada is the job you’ve been looking for.

Camp directors will be searching for applicants who can play their preferred instrument to a high standard, so it is advised that in your application, you state your preferred instrument and how well you can play. Camp directors will also be impressed by applicants who have experience teaching music. However, if you do not have any experience teaching, that’s no problem, just as long as you demonstrate that you are enthusiastic to teach campers and you have a good knowledge of music.

what does a music instructor do at summer camp?

Camps look for applicants who can play instruments and teach their campers - but there are lots of varied roles, such as DJs, sound technicians, and even radio hosts.

This is quite a varied role, as camps will have numerous different instruments that you will help campers learn to play, such as the guitar, piano, and many more.

You'll also be able to help out with other camp activities - you could direct the music for the camp theatrical performance or put on a camp concert!

What if I don't have any qualifications?

Short answer - it might not be a problem. For most activities, you won't need any particular qualifications to teach your activity at camp. For others, we may be able to provide training before camp starts - you'll still need a decent amount of experience in your activity, but we'll make sure you're ready before the campers start arriving. The best thing to do is apply for the role you want, and if it doesn't work out, you may be able to lock down a similar role. Whatever you end up doing, you'll still be fully trained for camp!

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.

Do I need to bring equipment?

Some camps will want you to bring equipment for certain activities, but this will likely only be in the form of clothes and personal gear, but they’ll let you know this once you’re hired. Most often, you won’t have to bring any specialist equipment, with Canadian summer camps being equipped with state of the art facilities to develop the campers’ skills, as well as yours.
